Openradiation joins a European-funded project

The question is often asked: what is the purpose of the data published on the Openradiation map? The CIThARA project will provide an initial answer.

OpenRadiation reached the milestone of one million measurements recorded on 16 July 2025. This mass of data constitutes a very important data source which, for the moment, remains underused, except for a few projects such as Cosmic on Air.

The CIThARA project aims to develop artificial intelligence tools to improve the speed and accuracy of analysis and modelling tools in the event of a radiological or nuclear emergency. In this context, citizen measurements represent a valuable source of data that complements expert measurement data.

However, citizen data is highly variable: it depends on measurement conditions, the environment and human factors.  Part of the CIThARA project will therefore consist of developing a method for contextualised analysis of citizen measurement results, cross-referencing different sources of information (geographical and geological) and using artificial intelligence tools. The aim is to produce robust and reliable datasets that can be used by experts.

The CIThARA project is funded by the European research partnership PIANOFORTE (https://pianoforte-partnership.eu/).
